Embrace Wilderness and Tranquility

Launched in 2003, Cathkin Estates is the result of decades of vision and determination to transform a cattle ranch into an eco-estate.
 
It is an exemplary example of successful environmental restoration and job creation through responsible development.
 
The estate represents the largest single package of Drakensberg property development rights granted in the region.
This project was driven by Peter Stockil who with his brother Mark partnered with Kaikoura Capital (Pty) Ltd (www.kaikoura.co.za) to form the Entabeni Development Company (Pty) Ltd who have financed the entire development with equity capital.
 
The Estate is managed by Cathkin Estates Home Owners Association NPC.
There are 5 Villages in total of which Village’s 1,2,3 and 5 were part of the initial launch. Village 4 has recently (2025) been developed and 28 individual plots are for sale.

The Estate

Cathkin Estates is a residential development set in the Champagne Valley, in the Central Drakensberg.

All properties are freehold and are set in Villages, spread across a 1054 ha wildlife sanctuary.  It is an eco-estate with a focus to limit both the visual and the physical impact of dwellings on the natural grassland environment.

 
 

Estate Management

In order to establish and maintain the integrity of a residential development, in such an awe-inspiring natural environment, the Board of Directors (elected to represent property owners) has consulted with a range of specialists and has adopted management strategies that encompass areas such as:

  • Access Control
  • Architectural Guidelines
  • Builder’s Conduct
  • Code of Conduct for all persons entering the estate
  • Fire Control and Management
  • Protection of Indigenous Plant Species and Removal of Alien Plants
  • Services to properties e.g. roads, electricity, piped treated water, refuse and waste collection and removal
  • Water
  • Wildlife Management and Control

All this is in addition to the basic administration and management functions that a development such as Cathkin Estates requires.

Management Structure

The Board of Directors (Trustees) comprises representatives from the developers, Entabeni Development Co. as well as elected property owners. This is the controlling body that ensures compliance with all relevant legislation and controls. Three separate portfolios manage the aspects in the section ‘Estate Management’. These portfolios are:

  • Architectural Review Committee (ARC)
  • Finance
  • Operations

Specialist companies are contracted to manage defined functions.
